Xcalak - History & Activities
Nestled within the serene Costa Maya Region along the Yucatán Peninsula, Xcalak stands as a tranquil fishing village, home to approximately 350 inhabitants. Situated just north of the Belize border, it graces Mexico's southernmost Caribbean coastline, shielded by the formidable Mesoamerican reef to the east and embraced by the lush embrace of the Mayan jungle to its west. This unspoiled gem exudes an aura of tranquility and offers a sanctuary of natural beauty.
Snorkeling:
Book a tour and explore Xcalak’s best snorkeling spots with a local guide. Delight in the area’s huge purple and orange coral fans, colorful reef fish, rock formations, cenotes, spotted eagle rays, eels, lobsters, and more. The crystal clear waters around Xcalak stay nice and warm, typically hovering just above 80℉. Tours leave from the dock and last 2-3 hours.
Scuba Diving:
The Mesoamerican Reef is the second largest barrier reef in the world. Lucky for us - it’s in our backyard! Book a tour with one of our local guides for an intimate and unique view of life underwater in Xcalak. A favorite dive spot of ours is “La Poza” frequented by schools of rolling tarpon.
Mayan Ruins:
For some above-water adventure check out the nearby archeological sites of Kohunlich or Chacchoben. These pyramids, temples, and plazas reveal secrets of the area’s history dating back over 2000 years. You’re sure to have a thrilling and humbling experience viewing the impressive structures. On the 2-3 hour drive from Xcalak be sure to look for howler monkeys, peccaries, foxes, and jaguars!
Wildlife:
Visit Bird Island or take a manatee tour with a local guide and connect with the wildlife that thrives in Xcalak’s diverse ecosystems. These tours are great for the seasoned ornithologist or opportunistic wildlife-appreciator. Pelicans, roseate spoonbills, kiskadees, and frigates are just a few of the species we adore. Tours leave from the dock and last 3-5 hours.
Water Activities:
Launch your kayak or board from the dock and paddle our unspoiled Caribbean coastline. We think you’ll really enjoy this active way to view the area’s wildlife. There are lots of buoys where you can tie off and snorkel. Maybe try SUP yoga. Take one of the cuts into Xcalak’s backside lagoons. Or find a new area to cast a line! Kayaks, paddle boards, lifejackets, and snorkel gear are available for our guests at no additional charge.
Day Trips:
Hit the road and explore the nearby cities of Mahahual (1 hour drive from Xcalak) and Bacalar (2 hours drive from Xcalak). Walk the Malecon, get a massage on the beach, or sip and shop at the numerous beach bars, restaurants, and “tienditas.” Splash around Cenote Azul or take a sunset tour of the famous Lagoon of 7 Colors. Some of the best “pan de piña” and tacos “al pastor” can be found along the way.
