The Region: Xcalak
At the southernmost point of the Yucatan Peninsula and just a few miles north of Belize, Xcalak is an untouched paradise. Compared to its neighbors to the north, it has significantly less tourism development. Its beaches are unspoiled, and its waters are beautiful turquoise. On the coast is the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef in the world. The reef provides a barrier from the waves and rough seas, making it a paradise for the fish and wildlife that call the flats home. The town’s position on a peninsula, which separates the Caribbean Sea and the Bay of Chetumal, makes it the perfect base camp. You can fish the saltwater flats, the bay’s edge region, and the mangrove lagoons from here. All three of these areas are a fly angler’s dream.
